Homes of St. Augustine 001
We met Tommy and Mere at church a few years back, but it feels like they’ve been part of our lives forever.
They are THE couple. We all want to be like Tommy and Mere when we grow up! They are inspiring in everything they touch you can just tell they care deeply about their craft, the people around them, and, of course, their dogs (dooey & Ike).
I couldn't think of more inspiring people to kick off this series.
"The Homes of St. Augustine" is a series dedicated to showcasing some of the amazing individuals who call this place home. We’ll explore their unique designs and homes transformed into vibrant, colorful sanctuaries filled with life.
When Joe and I first moved to St. Augustine, Florida, we were thrilled with how many items this place checked off our “dream home” list. The beach (obviously), the delicious food, the rich history, the fantastic weather, the excellent schools, the vibrant agriculture—St. Augustine had it all. But what truly surprised us, and ultimately made us fall in love with this beautiful place, was the PEOPLE. Whether locals or transplants, everyone here loves St. Augustine dearly, and that shared passion is contagious.
OK - if you’re still reading, happy you’re here (ILY)!
Tell us a little bit about yourselves?
T - We’re originally from Maryland and have been in St. Augustine for 17 years. I attended Flagler College as a graphic design and fine art student. We’ve been married for 14 years and have lived in different spots around town, but I love being on the island now. Our two dogs are Ike and Dooey and they rule.
M - I love being with my family and friends, being outside, architecture and design, trying new restaurants, second-hand shopping, and hanging at home with my boo and our pups. I studied Sculpture and Installation at Flagler and now that’s a lot of what I do as a Creative Director for Colonial Church, which is a dream come true. I love this house so much and I spend a lot of time dreaming about what we could do here, we’ve got lots of plans for her!
What does “home” mean to you?
T - Home is like a sanctuary for me—a place to escape the noise of the world, find peace and quiet, and truly be myself.
M - Home is my favorite place. The place I feel most free. I love that I can dictate what my home is and that it evolves with us. There’s no where else I can be as creative or silly or unplugged. It really is an escape from the world. I hope everyone feels that way about home!
How would you describe the vibe of your home?
T - I would describe our home however Mere does, haha. But I see open spaces, full of light, and a touch of the odd and unique. Ultimately, it just feels like us.
M - I see it as relaxed, light-hearted, eclectic and thoughtful. Built in the 70’s, she’s quirky but that’s what I love about it.
What are some things you enjoy most about living in Saint Augustine?
T - We had some friends visit from Atlanta recently, and they said they loved St. Augustine because it feels like the people aren’t full of ego. I think that’s true. There’s a general contentedness here, along with strong community support for people trying something new.
M - I really feel so lucky to live here! The pace of life is what I originally fell in love with. I love the laid-back feel of being by the beach mixed with the creativity of the people here. There’s a lot of special things happening and it’s really cool to feel inspired in a small town of awesome people.
Can you share with us some of your favorite places to go in town?
T - Choosing favorite places is tough. The beach is always on the list. Colonial Church is at the top, too. For food it’s the French Bakery, D’Aleo’s, Everything Bagel, V Pizza, Odd Birds, Asado Life, and Forgotten Tonic.
M - The beach! My love language is eating outside so, Odd Birds (for food and disco!), Asado Life, Ragga Surf Cafe, and Forgotten Tonic. Favorite shops are Coastal Traders, Cool and Collected Vintage & Antiques, and The Surf Stop. Sometimes we just get food and drive around cause this city is so dang pretty.
